A man has been charged with murdering a teenage boy during a disturbance involving up to 100 people in a remote Northern Territory community.

The 16-year-old suffered fatal stab wounds during Wednesday's violence, which also saw three men airlifted to the Darwin hospital.

A 49-year-old man has been charged with murdering the teen at Yirrkala in remote East Arnhem Land, a community home to just 1000 people.

He will face a Darwin court on Tuesday after handing himself in to police.

The three injured men, aged 18, 40 and 45, remain in hospital with injuries that are not considered life threatening.

Police have said there was tension in the community before the violence erupted on Wednesday, but things have remained calm since.

Officers have not elaborated on the cause of the tension, saying that would form part of their investigation.
