Man charged with killing DePaul student in West Rogers Park shooting

A Calumet Heights man has been charged with the fatal shooting of a DePaul University student in West Rogers Park on the North Side.

Jahrod Jean, 21, faces a count of first-degree murder in the June 21 shooting of Gary Tinder, 20, in the 6200 block of North Troy Street, police said.

Jean was arrested about 1:50 p.m. Friday after being identified as the shooter, police said. He is due in bond court Sunday.

In an obituary published in DePaul’s student newspaper, The DePaulia, Tinder’s family and friends remembered him as a sharp, gentle person who was “good at everything” and “couldn’t hurt a fly.”

A GoFundMe that was organized to “take care of his family” had more than doubled its $10,000 goal as of Saturday evening.
