A man has been charged with kidnap after an eight-year-old boy was snatched from a south-east London park.

The boy was taken by a stranger from Burgess Park near Addington Square in Camberwell at around 5.20pm on Monday.

A search was launched and he was safely reunited with his family a short time later.

Shane Upton, 24, of no fixed abode, was arrested by police on Wednesday.

Officers charged him with kidnap with intent to commit a sexual offence, and assault on a child under 13.

He is also accused of two counts of assault on an emergency worker over claims he hit, kicked and spat at the officers as they tried to arrest him.

Upton will appear in custody at Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
