Man charged with importing 4kg of 'coma in a bottle' drug

Australian Federal Police (AFP) have charged a Queensland man with importing 4 kilograms of a dangerous party drug sometimes nicknamed "coma in a bottle".

Trent Kunde, 22, was arrested at his family's Caboolture home on Tuesday after officers seized a quantity of gamma-butyrolactone (GBL).

Police said the drug — also referred to as liquid ecstasy or fantasy — could cause death or severe side effects, even in tiny doses.

Mr Kunde was charged with importing and possessing a commercial quantity of border-controlled drugs and had his case mentioned in Brisbane Magistrates Court today.

Both offences carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

Mr Kunde did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody until the case returns to court next Friday.

AFP Detective Superintendent Matthew Gale said it was the second time this week Brisbane police had charged a man for importing GBL.

"The use of any illicit substance can have dire outcomes but we want to remind the community of the dangers of this particular drug," he said.

"Symptoms of GBL use include vomiting, convulsions and comas — in serious cases it can result in death."

Last Thursday, police arrested and charged a 36-year-old Rothwell man for allegedly importing 8kg of the drug.

He was denied bail and was remanded in custody until his next court date in December.
