Man remanded in custody after hit-and-run killing of Melbourne soccer 'club legend'

Giau Van Nguyen did not apply for bail, but his lawyer indicated he would next week.

A Melbourne man will remain in custody after appearing in court charged over the hit-and-run death of a pedestrian who was killed while walking home from his soccer club.

Arthur Frangis, 78, was honoured last night with a special tribute match at the Westvale Soccer Club, where he had been a lifelong member and long-time volunteer.

He was struck by a car in St Albans, in Melbourne's west, just after 9:00pm on Wednesday.

Police said the driver did not stop and it was left to a passer-by to call for an ambulance.

Mr Frangis died at the scene.

On Friday night, Giau Van Nguyen was charged with dangerous driving causing death, failing to stop and failing to render assistance.

The 64-year-old did not apply for bail when he appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Friday.

But the court heard he intends to apply for bail when the matter returns to court on Thursday.

The Essendon man sat in the dock with his arms folded during the brief hearing.

In a Facebook post, Mr Frangis's soccer club described him as a "true club legend" who volunteered in the canteen and served at the bar.

The penalty for not stopping at the scene of the accident is a maximum of 10 years in prison.
