Nov. 30--A Chicago man alleged to have hijacked a taxicab after hailing it early Saturday morning and refusing to tell the driver where he wanted to go was ordered held in lieu of $25,000 bond Saturday.
Mino P. Emini, of the 500 block of West Kinzie Street, hailed a cab about 2 a.m. Saturday near the 300 block of West Erie Avenue in the River North neighborhood, got inside and refused to tell the driver where he wanted to go, according to court documents and Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Andres Almendarez.
When Emini continued refusing to tell the driver where he wanted to go, the driver pulled over, got out of the car, leaving it running, and opened a door of the car, asking Emini to please leave, Almendarez said.
In attempt to avoid a physical confrontation, the driver walked around to the other side of the car, and Emini entered the driver's side and drove away northbound on Orleans Street, according to Almendarez and court documents.
Police were notified of the incident and pulled Emini over about 2:15 a.m. in the 300 block of West Superior Street, police said.
Emini was charged with vehicular hijacking, a Class 1 felony.
Emini is a graduate of Harvard University and is employed at a downtown restaurant, an attorney with the Cook County public defender's office said in court Saturday. However, Harvard records do not indicate that anyone with the last name of Emini was an alumnus of the university.
Emini is scheduled to be in court again Friday.
