Nov. 16--A 31-year-old Chicago man was ordered held in lieu of $150,000 bail Saturday after allegedly fleeing from a state trooper on Interstate 90 and injuring two people when he crashed into a taxicab in the River North neighborhood.
About 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, a state trooper was traveling northbound on the interstate near West Fulton Street when he spotted a 2014 white Jeep Cherokee drift over lanes and cut off his unmarked vehicle, according to court records. The trooper activated his emergency lights and initiated a traffic stop at the Ohio Street exit, the documents said.
After the driver, identified as Tyrell Bishop, of the 8000 block of South Eberhart Avenue, pulled over onto the right shoulder, the trooper exited his own vehicle and began to approach the Jeep on foot. When the officer reached the rear of the vehicle, Bishop drove onto the Ohio ramp "at a high rate of speed," the documents said.
The officer returned to his car and followed the Jeep eastbound onto the ramp. He observed the Jeep travel through a red traffic signal at Ohio and North Orleans Street and lost sight of the vehicle, according to the documents.
The trooper came upon a vehicle crash at North Franklin Street and Grand Avenue, where he observed a cab with "heavy damage" to the passenger side. The white Jeep, which was damaged on the front end, was abandoned just south of the incident on Franklin, the documents said.
The officer then drove to Illinois Street, where he found Bishop walking on the sidewalk. He took Bishop into custody about 9:50 p.m., according to the documents. A 42-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman, who were in the cab, were injured in the crash and transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, prosecutors said during a court hearing Saturday.
Bishop was charged with aggravated fleeing and causing bodily harm, resisting or obstructing a police officer and leaving the scene of an accident. He was also cited for driving without a valid license, improper use of a designated lane and disobeying a traffic control device.
