A 30-year-old man is accused of fatally stabbing a good Samaritan who intervened after the man allegedly attacked a 14-year-old girl and her mother Friday morning at a Berwyn grocery store.
Fernando Barrios is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 32-year-old Humberto Guzman, and attempted murder after allegedly stabbing another man during the incident at Valle’s Produce, Berwyn police announced Saturday.
Barrios allegedly became irate at a girl whom he accused of cutting in line to buy a bottle of water at the store at 6323 W. Cermak Road, Berwyn Police Chief Michael Cimaglia said. The girl was actually just asking the cashier — who is also her mother — how much the water cost, police said.

Barrios allegedly began swearing and punched the 14-year-old in the face and also attacked her mother when she intervened, police said.
As Barrios tried to leave the store, Guzman stepped in to stop him, but Barrios pulled out a knife and allegedly stabbed him multiple times, police said. Guzman, a resident of southwest suburban Justice, died at a hospital an hour later.
Meanwhile, Barrios ran down an alley where he was confronted by a second good Samaritan, Cimaglia said. Barrios allegedly stabbed the man in the torso before fleeing.
That man and the girl were hospitalized with injuries that weren’t considered life threatening.
Barrios was found in a backyard in the 2300 block of Cuyler Avenue and taken into custody, Cimaglia said.
He was expected to appear in court for a bail hearing Saturday afternoon.
