Man charged with DUI, driving 99 mph in Riverside

Jan. 02--A man on his way home from a New Year's Eve party in Chicago was arrested Thursday after he allegedly was clocked driving 99 mph while drunk, according to Riverside police.

Miguel A. Ocampo, of the 8100 block of West 30th Street in North Riverside, was charged with speeding, two counts of driving under the influence, disobeying a traffic control light, driving without insurance and reckless driving, according to a news release issued by Riverside police Chief Thomas Weitzel.

According to police, Ocampo, 20, was arrested at 12:59 a.m. when a Riverside police officer clocked him driving 99 mph in a 35 mph zone on 26th Street between Harlem and Desplaines avenues, police said.

The officer stopped the 2006 Nissan sedan on 27th Street at Desplaines Avenue, police said.

During the stop, the officer noticed that Ocampo had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, police said. According to the news release, Ocampo admitted drinking and said he was on his way home from a New Year's Eve party in Chicago.

The officer administered sobriety tests, including a portable breath test, and Ocampo registered a 0.13 blood alcohol level, police said.

Ocampo told officers he thought he was traveling 80 to 90 mph when he was stopped and said he "wanted to see how fast he could get his car to travel in the shortest distance possible," according to police.
