Lorry driver charged with causing death of Peterlee man by dangerous driving after fatal collision near Washington

A man has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving following a fatal collision near Washington last month.

Driver John Terence Robinson, 24, died after a collision with a heavy goods vehicle on the A19 southbound at the A1231 junction on March 13.

Emergency services attended but John, from Peterlee , passed away from his injuries.

An investigation was launched and a 56-year-old man was arrested and questioned.

On Monday, police confirmed that he has now been charged in relation to the crash .

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "An investigation was subsequently launched to determine the circumstances surrounding John’s death.

"Police have now charged Marcel Balan, 56, of no fixed abode, with causing death by dangerous driving.

"He is due to appear before magistrates in South Tyneside this morning (Monday).

"Any witnesses to the collision who are yet to come forward are asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference 2 130319 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
