Man charged with carjacking, DUI in Villa Park crime spree

A Villa Park man is accused of hijacking a woman’s vehicle at a gas station and trying to break into two others at a Walgreens last month in the northwest suburb.

Michael Davis, 35, is charged with felony counts of vehicular hijacking, attempted vehicular hijacking, aggravated battery in a public place, possession of a stolen motor vehicle and aggravated DUI, according to a statement from the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office.

“It is alleged that within a very short amount of time, Mr. Davis’ brief crime spree claimed eight victims and caused significant damage to gas station property and three vehicles,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in the statement. “These allegations are outrageous and will be met with the full force of the law. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured as a result of Mr. Davis’ alleged actions.”

Police were called about 5:10 p.m. Sept. 29 for reports of a person trying to break into two cars in the parking lot of a Walgreens at 200 E. Roosevelt Road, the state’s attorney’s office said.

Davis got into the passenger seat of an occupied vehicle and demanded that the person inside drive away, prosecutors said. When the driver got out of the car to attend to someone in the back seat, Davis got out and tried to enter the driver’s seat.

He then ran to another car, punched the windows and told the female driver to let him in, prosecutors said. She refused and Davis ran to a nearby Thornton’s gas station, where he entered a woman’s car while she was washing the windows.

Davis drove off, dragging the woman as she held on to the steering wheel, according to the state’s attorney’s office. She eventually let go before Davis crashed the car into an outdoor store display and two other vehicles at the gas station.

He then got out and ran west on Roosevelt, prosecutors said. He was taken into custody by Lombard police near the scene of the crash and his blood alcohol content was recorded at 0.261, more than three times the legal limit.

Davis is being held at the DuPage County Jail on $250,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 31.
