Man charged with burning down home in Perth Hills

The second storey of the home collapsed during the blaze.

A 34-year-old man has been charged with causing criminal damage by fire, by allegedly setting a Mount Helena home in the Perth Hills alight and causing $500,000 damage.

Up to 40 firefighters worked through the night to extinguish the blaze, which caused the two-storey home to collapse.

The blaze also sparked bushfires in the area when it spread to neighbouring properties.

Fire crews brought in machinery to pull apart the structure of the home to extinguish the blaze.

Neighbours described hearing two explosions and seeing flames billowing from the house before it became fully engulfed.

Police had been called to a disturbance at the property shortly before fire crews were alerted to the blaze.

St John Ambulance took the 34-year-old man to Royal Perth Hospital, where he is in a serious but stable condition.

It is understood he was injured escaping the flames through a second-storey window.
