Man charged with beating up South Side store clerk in robbery

Feb. 13--A Far South Side man was ordered held on $80,000 bail Friday after being charged with robbing an Englewood liquor store worker and injuring him earlier this month.

James F. Webb, 21, appeared before Judge Laura Sullivan during a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Court Building, charged with robbery and aggravated battery of a merchant.

Webb entered New Kenwood Food and Liquor, 5859 S. Halsted St., jumped over the counter and attacked a 33-year-old store clerk about 4:10 p.m. Feb. 5, said Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto.

"He beat the victim and took cash and his cellphone," Scaduto said in court. Webb gave the man a "severe black eye" and took $350 during the incident, which was captured on store video, she added.

The clerk was released from St. Bernard Hospital, where he was treated for bruises and a swollen right eye, according to a police report.

Police who were following up on the incident went to the home of the victim, who told them he knew Webb's first name and where he lived. When police spoke to Webb, he admitted that he was "involved in an altercation" with the store clerk and he'd taken the man's phone "with the intent of depriving him of it," the report said.

Cook County Assistant Public Defender Todd Chatman said Webb is a maintenance worker. He lives with his grandmother, according to a police report.

Webb, of the 1000 block of West 103rd Place, is slated to appear in court again Thursday.
