Feb. 15--A South Side man shot by police Saturday after officers said he tried to pull a gun on them has been charged with attempted first degree murder, police said Sunday.
Darell Robertson, 18, of the 7200 block of S. Wentworth Avenue in the Englewood neighborhood, also is charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and unauthorized use of a weapon, according to a news release from the Chicago Police Department Office of News Affairs.
Robertson was held without bail at a court hearing Sunday but police said he remained at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with multiple gunshot wounds, police said.
A police officer at Robertson's court hearing told Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil Robertson was in good condition at the hospital.
After Kuriakos Ciesil ordered Robertson held without bail.
According to the release, police had been on patrol about 12:30 a.m. Saturday in the 1300 block of West 73rd Street when they saw someone attempting to park a car illegally. After doing a check on the vehicle's license plates, police found that the car had been stolen. As they left their police vehicle to approach that car, the driver took off, hitting the squad car and several other parked vehicles.
When the car came to a stop, officers approached the sedan and told the driver to put his hands up, police said Saturday.
"At that time, the offender was reaching into his coat pocket," Chicago police Deputy Chief Dana Alexander said Saturday. "It was at this time that the offender pulled an object from his coat. The officers saw what they believed to be the butt of a gun and several shots were fired from the officers."
The driver was hit multiple times and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said Saturday.
Two women also were in the car when the man tried to flee police. One woman, who jumped in the back seat from the front seat when police broke out the window of the car, was taken to St. Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center to be treated for minor injuries. The other woman in the car was unharmed, Camden said.
No officers were injured, and police recovered a 9mm handgun on the scene, Camden and police said.
