Police said the men knew each other. (ABC News)

A man is in a critical condition in hospital after allegedly being stabbed north-east of Adelaide overnight.

Emergency services were called to an address at Blanchetown, in South Australia's Murraylands, just after 12:30am following reports of a serious assault.

They found a 47-year-old man with stab wounds to his abdomen.

He was treated at the scene before being airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

He remains in a serious but stable condition.

A 36-year-old Blanchetown man was arrested at the scene and has been charged with attempted murder.

He will appear in the Berri Magistrates Court on Monday.

Berri detectives and crime scene investigators were at the scene overnight.

Police said the incident was not random and the men knew each other.
