Man charged with attempted murder after police officer stabbed in Tayport

A man has been charged with attempted murder following the stabbing of a police officer.

The 46-year-old male officer was attacked while responding to reports of a disturbance in Tayport, Fife, in the early hours of Saturday.

He suffered a puncture wound to his chest which required hospital treatment.

A 37-year-old was arrested over the blade assault.

The Scottish Police Federation said the incident was a “reminder” of the “unpredictable violence and danger” officers face on duty.

The stabbing took place in a property in Lundin Crescent, Tayport.

The officer was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee for treatment to the wound.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Police can confirm a 46-year-old man was stabbed in the chest while responding to a disturbance in the Tayport area.

“The incident occurred shortly before 1am on Saturday.

“The officer received a puncture wound and required hospital treatment, but was later released and is recovering at home.

“A 37-year-old man was arrested and charged with attempted murder.”

Brian Jones, health and safety lead for the Scottish Police Federation, said: “We obviously wish our injured colleague well and hope he recovers quickly.

“This type of incident is a timely reminder that police officers face unpredictable violence and danger on a daily basis.

“They place themselves in harms way so that others may be safe.

“We are eternally grateful that on this occasion our colleague will live to tell the tale.”

Last June two police officers were stabbed in Greenock after accompanying mental health workers to a flat.

PC Keith Mackenzie was knifed in the neck and PC Laura Sayer slashed on the arm as they grappled with the attacker in the street.

In February PC Sayer told the BBC about her recovery from the “terrifying” ordeal.

She said running had helped her remain positive, and she was training for the New York marathon to help a charity supporting officers.

The officer, 40, had less than six months’ service with Police Scotland when she was badly hurt.

A nerve in her forearm was severed. Although doctors reattached the nerve, she was still experiencing pain and numbness in the area.

PC Sayer said: “It won’t ever be back to what it was because it had been completely severed so it’s just a case of waiting to see.

“It’s still pretty annoying. It’s nerve pain every day, I’m aware of it all the time - but trying to stay positive, hopefully in the future it will improve.”

She spent ten weeks with her arm in a sling, unable to move it, but was able to return to work in November.
