A 23-year-old man is facing attempted murder and assault charges after allegedly pushing a 45-year-old man onto subway tracks at the 18th Street station in Chelsea, Manhattan. The victim suffered a head injury and broken rib but is now in stable condition at Belleview Hospital. Fortunately, he was not struck by the passing train. The suspect, Kamel Hawkins, has been charged with attempted murder in the second degree and assault in the second degree.
It remains unclear what motivated the attack or if there was any prior relationship between the suspect and the victim. Eyewitness Violet Paley described the harrowing incident, expressing shock at the scene but relief that the victim survived. This incident adds to a recent spate of violent encounters in New York City subway stations during the holiday season.
Recent String of Violent Incidents

This incident follows the tragic case of a woman, Debrina Kawan, who was burned alive while sleeping on a subway train last month. The victim, identified as a 57-year-old New Jersey resident, was allegedly killed by Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, who has been indicted on charges of first- and second-degree murder and arson. Authorities took time to identify Kawan due to the severity of her injuries.
Mayor Eric Adams emphasized the need for better care for vulnerable individuals, stating that people should not be living in subway systems. The recent incidents have raised concerns about safety in New York City's transit system, prompting calls for increased security measures and support for those in need.
