Man charged with attempted murder after 'horrific' street attack

A man has been charged with attempted murder by detectives probing an "horrific" assault.

Police were alerted to reports of an attack on Old Liverpool Road in Warrington at 11.25am on Saturday.

Officers became aware when they were informed a 35-year-old male, from Widnes, had attended hospital with serious head injuries.

It was thought a weapon had been used in the daylight incident.

Appealing for information, Detective Sergeant John Rhodes, who is leading the investigation, said: “This was a horrific assault which took place in the middle of the street during a busy time of day.

“The victim received hospital treatment for serious injuries to his head caused by a weapon and has now been released from hospital."

A 42-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder was released with no further action.

Cheshire Police today confirmed David Laponda, from Cale Green in Stockport, had been charged with attempted murder.

The 35-year-old was due to appear at Warrington Magistrates' Court today.

*Anyone with information about the incident can either call Cheshire Police on 101 or give details through Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
