Man charged with assaulting seven police

NSW Police have charged a man with multiple assaults during an arrest near the Victoria border. (AAP)

A man has been charged after he assaulted seven police officers as they tried to arrest him near the NSW-Victoria border.

Police were searching for the 36-year-old man after a woman claimed he had assaulted her on Sunday.

When they located him in North Albury on Monday, he allegedly assaulted the NSW police officers before fleeing as they tried to arrest him.

Following a short foot pursuit, the man continued to resist arrest and pepper spray was used.

Additional police - including from Victoria - were called to help subdue the man who allegedly continued to assault officers, kicking and punching them.

The man was arrested and taken to Albury Base Hospital, under police guard, for treatment of minor cuts and abrasions.

He was transferred to Albury Police Station where he was charged with 21 offences, including intentionally choking a person without consent, destroying or damaging property, resisting an officer, assaulting an officer, and escaping police custody.

It will be alleged in court that the man assaulted six NSW Police officers and spat in the face of an officer from Victoria Police.

The man appeared at Albury Local Court on Monday, where he was formally refused bail to appear at the same court on Monday 10 January 2022.
