Man charged with animal cruelty over dog punching attack in Mackay street

A 30-year-old man has been charged over an attack of a dog where CCTV footage allegedly showed him holding down and repeatedly punching the animal in a street in Mackay in north Queensland.

The RSPCA Queensland have charged the man, from North Mackay, with one count of animal cruelty.

He has been summonsed to appear in Mackay Magistrates Court.

Besides having heartworm, RSPCA Queensland said the bull Arab cross was in fairly good health, describing the five-year-old dog as "lovely natured".

Speaking on Wednesday following the release of the footage, RSPCA Queensland spokesman Michael Beatty said he had been horrified by the clip.

"Personally, I find the attack very disturbing, I mean the attack just went on and on," Mr Beatty said.

"What's really disturbing is that it seems totally unprovoked — the dog didn't act aggressively in any of the vision that we've seen and the dog had no idea what was going to happen when he went to the man.

"I have no idea what else to say but he just beats the crap out of the dog.

"You have to wonder about the inner violence of someone who would do something like this to a defenceless creature," Mr Beatty said.

The maximum penalty for animal cruelty under the Animal Care and Protection Act is three years in jail or a fine of up to $220,000.
