Man charged with allegedly organising failed hit on Sydney underworld figure Ibrahem Hamze

Police have charged an alleged associate of the Alameddine family with plotting a failed hit on Sydney underworld figure Ibrahem Hamze last year.

It's alleged Mr Hamze was the target of two armed and masked men who drove in a stolen Mercedes to North Sydney on August 14, 2021.

Mr Hamze, 27, was said to be a marked man in an ongoing and deadly feud between the Hamzy — sometimes spelt Hamze — and Alameddine families.

However, highway patrol officers unwittingly foiled the alleged murder plot when they identified the vehicle as stolen and carrying cloned number plates.

After a short pursuit, the Mercedes was found abandoned in Miller Street in Cammeray with a jerry can in the boot.

Police say a 76-year-old man was allegedly threatened with a gun before the two men stole his Toyota Camry and drove off.

Superintendent Grant Taylor last year said Mr Hamze could "thank his lucky stars" he was still alive, as the men had allegedly set out with the "sole intention" of killing him.

Yesterday, detectives charged Joseph Vokai, 26, with conspiring to murder Mr Hamze.

Police will allege in court Mr Vokai is an associate of the Alameddine family and was involved in organising and directing others in the attempted hit.

He is due to appear before Parramatta Local Court on March 31.

Mr Vokai is the third person to be arrested in relation to the alleged murder attempt.

In September, detectives stormed the Granville home of Samuel John Rokomaqisa, 32, and charged him with offences including conspire and agree to murder.

A court heard the DNA of Mr Rokomaqisa's, who police claim had links to the Alameddine family, was allegedly found inside the Mercedes and on the jerry can in its boot.

His lawyer, Zemarai Khatiz, told Central Local Court Mr Rokomaqisa denied all allegations.

A third man, 19, was charged with allegedly concealing a vehicle used in the failed hit.

Mr Hamze, who police say is a senior member of the Hamzy crew, has also been arrested and charged over a separate alleged murder plot.

His brother, Bilal Hamze, and cousins Mejid Hamzy and Ghassan Amoun have all been killed since the gangland feud erupted in October 2020.
