Police have charged a 28-year-old man with raping and intimidating a teenage girl in western Sydney. (AAP)

A man has been charged with allegedly raping and intimidating a teenage girl in western Sydney after meeting her on social media.

Detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad will also allege in court the Bass Hill man, 28, made multiple threats to the 14-year-old girl, including to harm her.

Police began investigating after receiving information a teenage girl had been sexually abused after meeting a man online.

Police learned the girl met the man via a social media app in June 2021 and the pair communicated virtually before meeting in person in January 2022.

After this initial meeting, police allege the man sexually assaulted the teenage girl on three occasions.

Detectives arrested a 28-year-old Bass Hill man at Blacktown Police Station about 12.15pm on Monday, and he was charged with three counts of having sexual intercourse with a child aged between 14 and 16, and stalking/intimidating with intent.

He was refused bail and will appear at Blacktown Local Court on Tuesday.
