New South Wales police have charged a 28-year-old man for allegedly stabbing one man and assaulting another while he was being transported from the Villawood immigration detention centre.

Tongan national Paea Teu was being taken from the detention centre to Sydney airport on Thursday when police allege he attacked two men who were transporting him. He then went on the run for two days.

A 24-year-old woman has also been arrested and charged with knowingly harbouring an escaped inmate.

Officers were called to James Ruse Drive in Sydney’s west about 3.40am on Thursday, following reports a 54-year-old man had been stabbed in the neck and face and a 36-year-old man assaulted.

The two injured men were treated at Westmead Hospital.

NSW police commenced an extensive search after Teu allegedly fled the scene.

Police said officers were called to Eschol Park Drive in Eschol Park at about 9.40pm on Friday after reports the 28-year-old had been seen.

He was arrested a short time later and taken to Campbelltown police station.

He has been charged with causing wounding and grievous bodily harm to a person with intent to murder and wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was refused bail and is scheduled to appear at Parramatta local court on Saturday.

A 24-year-old woman was also arrested and has been charged with knowingly harbouring, maintaining or employing an escaped inmate. She was granted conditional bail to appear at Campbelltown local court on 22 May.
