Man charged over racist tweet about Liverpool's Mo Salah

A man suspected of sending a racist tweet about Liverpool FC star Mohamed Salah has been charged.

Gary Hyland, 32, of Church Road, Waterloo, is accused of a racially aggravated public order offence and obstructing a constable in the execution of their duty, Merseyside Police said.

He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Friday.

An investigation was launched after an offensive tweet about the Egyptian-born striker was reportedly posted by an Everton FC fan.

The post was condemned by the club.

In a statement, Everton said: "Everton condemns in the strongest terms any kind of racism.

"We have shared the material with the appropriate authorities and are looking into the matter further to understand if the Twitter user in question is known to the club in any way."
