A man has been charged with drunkenly driving a forklift and causing the death of another man riding on the vehicle when it rolled in the rural Queensland town of Middlemount.

Police say the two men had been drinking at a work shed when they decided to drive the forklift to a nearby sports club at around 2.30am on July 24.

"It will be alleged the driver continued to drink rum whilst heading west on Centenary Drive South. After approximately 600 metres, the forklift has left the roadway and rolled," police said in a statement.

The passenger, a 35-year-old Mansfield man, died at the scene.

The driver, a 42-year-old Sarina man, was on Thursday charged with driving without due care causing death, consuming liquor while driving and driving with a passenger in a vehicle not designed for that.

He will appear in the Mackay Magistrates Court on October 5.
