Police were forced to take cover when a man fired three shots at a property in country Victoria.

The 38-year-old from Craigieburn later surrendered and faces several charges.

Police were called to the property at Greta West near Wangaratta, in Victoria's north, at 6.15pm on Tuesday.

The man was allegedly agitated and confronted the police with two firearms.

Police tried to negotiate as the man hid himself on the property.

"It is alleged during the incident that three shots were fired causing the responding police to seek cover and retreat to safety," Victoria Police said.

The man then surrendered without incident at 9.15pm.

He faces several charges, including conduct endangering life and discharging a firearm reckless to the safety of police.

The man was remanded to appear in Wangaratta Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning.
