Man charged over Perth stadium hoon ride

A man will face court accused of smashing his way into Optus Stadium and driving on the field. (AAP)

A man has been accused of smashing his way into Perth's Optus Stadium and hooning around on the playing surface in a ute.

The 29-year-old has been hit with charges of trespass, reckless driving and criminal damage or destruction of property over the incident on February 1.

Police allege the man from Secret Harbour, about 55km south of Perth, drove a black Ford Ranger at speed through a boom gate and shutter door.

Once on the oval, police say he drove recklessly before being detained by staff until officers arrived.

It happened on the first day of the five-day lockdown for Perth, Peel and the South West, when strict rules for leaving home came into force after a quarantine hotel worker tested positive for COVID-19.

The venue is scheduled to host a go-karting event on Sunday and its first clash of the AFL season between West Coast and Gold Coast on March 21.

The man is scheduled to appear in Perth Magistrates Court later this month.
