Man charged over Manus Island protest that saw Christine Forster targeted

NSW Police have charged one man and released images of three others as part of their investigation into a Sydney protest where the former Prime Minister's sister was harassed.

City of Sydney councillor Christine Forster was targeted by protesters on Friday night as she tried to enter a Liberal party function.

She said police helped her escaped the crowd that swarmed the event to protest against the withdrawal of services to asylum seekers detained on Manus Island.

The Manus Island detention protesters noticed Cr Forster and her partner Virginia Edwards when someone pointed out she was Tony Abbott's sister.

At the time she condemned the protesters' behaviour and said she did not want such melees in her electorate.

A 27-year-old man has been charged with malicious damage and hindering police during the execution of their duties.

Police issued him with a court attendance notice and he will appear at the Downing Centre Local Court in January next year.

After reviewing footage of the event police have also released images of three other men they want to speak to.

"We also hope that if members of the community recognise the people in these stills, that they can provide that information to investigators," Central Metropolitan Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Mark Walton said.
