Man appears in court over hit-and-run that killed Dutch cyclist

The woman was riding in the bike lane on Chapel St when she was hit.

A man has appeared in court charged with culpable driving, failing to stop and failing to render assistance over a crash that killed a cyclist in Melbourne's inner south-east.

A 27-year-old Dutch national was riding in the bike lane on Chapel Street, South Yarra, on Sunday morning when she was hit by an allegedly stolen Mercedes and pinned against another car.

The woman, who was living in Melbourne on a work visa, was treated by emergency services but died at the scene.

Police said the car also collided with several parked cars and a moving car along Chapel St.

Police alleged the driver ran away after the crash.

Michael Panayides, 26, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court Tuesday with his left arm in a cast.

He showed no emotion during the brief hearing and did not apply for bail.

The prosecution asked the court for a longer-than-normal 10 weeks to prepare its case to allow for analysis of the car's airbags and forensic evidence.

Mr Panayides, who has no fixed address, was arrested on Bourke Street in the CBD at about 5:30pm Monday, after a member of the public recognised him from images released by police.

He has been charged with culpable driving, failing to stop after a collision, failing to render assistance and dealing with the proceeds of crime.

He is due to return to court in December.
