
A MAN has been charged over a double fatal crash at Salamander Bay that emergency services described as "gut-wrenching".
Six NSW Ambulance crews, police and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter were called to the intersection of Port Stephens Drive and Salamander Way about 2pm on August 26 after reports of a two-vehicle crash. The driver, a 77-year-old woman, and her passenger - an 80-year-old man - died at the scene.

On Thursday, a 44-year-old Tanilba Bay man was charged with two counts of manslaughter, two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death - drive manner dangerous, two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death - drive speed dangerous, negligent driving - occasioning death, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, negligent driving, not keep left of dividing line and class A motor vehicle exceed speed over 30km/h.
He appeared before Raymond Terrace Local Court on Thursday, where he was formally refused bail to appear before the same court on January 18.
