Man charged over death of a pedestrian and his guide dog

A 22-year-old Central Victorian man has been charged over the death of a pedestrian and his guide dog in Wedderburn, north-west of Bendigo, almost one year to the day since it happened.

Ray Meadows, 63, and his labrador Gerry were hit by a car while walking along the Calder Highway just after 6.30am on June 2, 2019.

Both Mr Meadows, and his dog, died at the scene.

On Saturday detectives arrested and charged a Bridgewater man with dangerous driving causing death, destruction of evidence, perverting the course of justice and threats to kill.

The arrest follows an extensive investigation by detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit, which saw Australian Federal Police and SES brought in to help gather evidence.

The man is in custody and will appear at Shepparton Magistrates Court on Monday, June 1.
