Man charged over attack on prison staff in Bristol

A man has been charged following an incident at HMP Bristol which resulted in several prison officers needing hospital treatment.

Five prison officers were injured following an incident at the prison on Friday (January 10).

Four required hospital treatment and have since been discharged.

Avon and Somerset police said that a suspect was detained by prison staff at the time of the incident.

Daniel Matthews, 27, has been charged with two counts of attempting to commit grievous bodily harm with intent, three counts of assaulting an emergency worker and one of having an offensive weapon in prison.

He is due to appear before Bristol Magistrates' Court tomorrow (Monday).

The incident has prompted calls for a review into greater protection for prison staff.

Mike Fairhurst, chairman of the Prison Officers' Association (POA), said it was time for a Government review of personal protection equipment for staff.
