Man charged over alleged police pursuit through Lake Macquarie suburbs

A man has been charged after allegedly leading police on a chase at Lake Macquarie.

Police were patrolling Belmont North about 3pm on Monday when they saw a blue Ford Falcon - which was reported stolen from Forster last week - outside a Leicester Street property.

Officers spoke to people at nearby homes before a 32-year-old man allegedly got into the car and sped away from the scene.

Police initiated a pursuit which went through several streets before the Falcon drove onto the northbound lanes of the Pacific Highway at Gateshead - allegedly reaching speeds about 110km/h in a 60km/h zone and travelling through a red light - before the vehicle stopped at the intersection of the Pacific Highway and South Street at Windale.

Police arrested the 32-year-old and he was charged with police pursuit - not stop, drive dangerously, and drive whilst unlicensed.

He was refused bail to face Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday.
