His arrest came after a 50-year-old man died outside a Silsoe Street home about 11.20pm on Boxing Day.

The man had suffered a stab wound to the neck.

Police said a post-Christmas backyard party was in its final throes when the incident occurred.

Mr Johnson will face Newcastle local court via audio-visual link on January 6.
