Man charged over alleged assault of north Queensland politician

A 57-year-old man has been charged over the alleged assault of Member for Whitsunday Jason Costigan at the weekend.

Police charged the man with common assault after the State Member for Whitsunday was punched in the back while having dinner at a pub in Proserpine on Friday night.

North Queensland politician Jason Costigan said he believed an assault against him may have been partly fuelled by a now-withdrawn sexual harassment complaint from last year.

"I think a lot of this comes back to the crap that was said about me early last year, and I'll be blunt, I'll tell you that some mud sticks," he said.

"I know we're fair game but it has descended into an appalling state of affairs in terms of society and decay.

"No respect for the law, no respect for our leaders, or politics."

The assault happened before 10:00pm on Friday night at the Metropole Hotel in Proserpine.

The 57-year-old man will appear before the Proserpine Magistrates court on September 28.
