Man charged in Newcastle West for allegedly breaking COVID-19 rules

A man in Newcastle is among six people charged across NSW for allegedly breaching COVID-19 restrictions in the 24-hours to Friday afternoon.

Police said officers were patrolling Steel Street at Newcastle West about 2pm on Thursday when they spoke with two men.

Checks revealed that one of them, according to police, had been previously warned and had received a $1000 on-the-spot fine for flouting the rules on Tuesday.

Police said the 20-year-old allegedly refused to provide his personal details and repeatedly used offensive language.

He was arrested and charged with using offensive language in/near a public place, breach of bail and not complying with noticed direction re section 7/8/9 - COVID-19.

The Clarence Town man was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court.

Police have charged six people under the Public Health Act 2010 (NSW) and issued 24 COVID-19 related fines for offences within the past 24 hours.
