Man charged in gang-related shooting on Near West Side

Feb. 19--A man was ordered held without bail Wednesday in a gang-related shooting that wounded a woman earlier this week on the Near West Side.

Carlos Luna, 18, is accused of shooting a 22-year-old woman in the back around 8 p.m. in the 1800 block of South Leavitt Street in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood, police said.

The woman was driving in the area of 18th and South Leavitt streets with her gang-affiliated boyfriend and two passengers, one of whom was Luna, when the group noticed a beige minivan with rival gang members inside, police said.

The woman's boyfriend switched places with her and started driving to avoid the minivan. At some point, Luna took out a gun and inadvertently fired it inside the car, striking the woman in the upper left back, according to police.

Police said all three men in the car are members of the Satan Disciples street gang.

The woman, who police said had no criminal history or gang affiliations on record, was driven by her boyfriend to Stroger Hospital, where she was initially listed in serious but stable condition.

Luna, of the 2000 block of West 18th Place, was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon, according to a statement from Chicago police.
