May 05--A man was ordered held without bail after being charged with fatally shooting one man and critically injuring another in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, according to prosecutors.
Omar Dishman, 22, appeared before Judge Peggy Chiampas Thursday at the Leighton Criminal Court Building. He is charged with the April 26 killing of Glenn Wheeler, 24, of the 5200 block of South Wood Street, prosecutors said.
Wheeler and a 20-year-old man had left a home at 52nd and Halsted Streets and were waiting to cross the street, prosecutors said. A four-door silver sedan with Dishman in the front seat passed them while heading south on Halsted Street, prosecutors said.
The 20-year-old and Dishman knew each other for about 10 years, beginning in school. The 20-year-old had transferred out of two schools because of a gang dispute with Dishman and his friends, according to prosecutors.
Dishman was a member of the P-Stones gang and accused the 20-year-old of being a member of the Gangster Disciples gang because of where he lived, prosecutors said.
When Wheeler and the 20-year-old got into their car and drove south on Halsted Street, the silver car appeared and began following them, according to prosecutors.
As Wheeler and the other man waited at a traffic light on Garfield Boulevard and Morgan Street, Dishman's car pulled up behind Wheeler's car prosecutors said. Someone got out, walked up to the car and began firing, according to prosecutors.
Wheeler got out of the car and tried to run away but fell to the ground, they said. The shooter got back into the sedan and drove off.
Wheeler was pronounced dead at 6 p.m. on the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office and prosecutors.
A total of 21 shell casings were recovered from a 9mm and 40-caliber guns.
