Man charged in deadly stabbing of security guard in Washington Park

A resident of a Washington Park apartment building stabbed and killed the building’s security guard after he was confronted about damage to the property, Cook County prosecutors said Monday.

Security cameras captured Ramon Rosario stabbing Kenneth McKinney, 53, several times in the back, in the 6200 block of King Drive, Assistant State’s Attorney James Murphy said.

Another resident also witnessed the incident that took place 2 a.m. Saturday, Murphy said.

Two residents saw Rosario, 43, earlier locked in the building’s courtyard and banging on doors, Murphy said.

One of the residents was on the phone with McKinney to tell him about the situation when they heard Rosario smash a glass window and saw him walk down the hallway, Murphy said.

Rosario took an elevator to the first floor and tried to exit through the building’s front door but was confronted by McKinney who was on security duty, Murphy said.

Rosario responded by lunging at McKinney with an eight-inch kitchen knife, stabbing him once in the back, Murphy said.

McKinney was able to get up and run into a nearby stairwell before tripping on a landing. There, Rosario stabbed him “approximately two more times” in the back, Murphy said.

Another resident heard the commotion, called 911, ran down the stairs and saw the stabbing, Murphy said.

McKinney was unresponsive when Chicago police officers showed up. The Hyde Park resident was later pronounced dead as a result of his injuries at University of Chicago Hospital, Murphy said.

Police found Rosario about 10 minutes later walking down 61st Street, bloodied and with the knife still in hand, Murphy said. He was also taken to University of Chicago Hospital to for a hand injury.

Rosario has mental health issues, Assistant Public Defender Margaret Domin told Judge David Navarro.

Rosario’s has two prior felonies and three misdemeanors, prosecutors said.

Navarro ordered Rosario held without bail for first-degree murder. He is expected back in court June 19.
