Man charged in connection with alleged threat made against MP Joanna Cherry

Police have charged a 30-year-old man in connection with an alleged online threat made against MP Joanna Cherry.

The MP for Edinburgh South West said she had been the victim of an alleged “vicious threat to her safety" on Monday evening.

The incident came after the news the MP had been sacked from the SNP front bench at Westminster.

She told her followers she was “somewhere safe” and had contacted police.

Officers have now confirmed a man has been charged in connection with the matter.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "A 30-year-old man has been charged with a communications offence and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

Joanna Cherry tweeted: “Pleased to advise that @policescotland have arrested & charged a man in relation to the threats I received on Monday night. I’d like to thank them for their swift action. But this is not ok. Other enquiries are ongoing.”
