Man charged in connection with fatal Bronzeville shooting

June 27--Authorities charged a man in connection with a shooting that killed a 52-year-old bystander and wounded three others Tuesday evening in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side.

Julius Thomas, 26, of the 400 block of East 42nd Street, was charged with one count of armed robbery with a firearm, police said.

As of early Saturday, Thomas was being held at Cook County Jail in lieu of $275,000 bail, according to jail records.

Thomas is accused of the robbery in connection with a shooting that happened around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday in the 200 block of East 35th Street, a little more than a block from Chicago Police Department headquarters, police said.

Police said four people were shot after two groups of people exchanged gunfire.

A man, 52, who police said was not a target in the shooting, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead, police said.

The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the man as Christan Barlow, of the 2400 block of East 73rd Street.

An 18-year-old man was also taken to Northwestern in serious condition. A 20-year-old woman and 20-year-old man were taken to Stroger Hospital. The woman was listed in critical condition, and the man's condition stabilized, police said.

Near the shooting scene, crime scene tape covered several blocks of 35th Street. Witnesses said two groups fired at each other.

In the aftermath, a black Nissan Maxima with Florida license plates, with both doors ajar and airbags deployed came to a stop at an odd angle in front of Good Time Sports Bar. A short time after the shooting, an ambulance raced north on King Drive with a paramedic in back working on one of the victims.

At Prairie Avenue and 35th, more than a dozen evidence markers were placed on the sidewalk outside a deli and in the street.

Police arrested Thomas on Wednesday, and he is scheduled to appear in court again June 30.

The shooting is still under investigation, police said.
