Man charged in Back of the Yards killing

Oct. 28--A Southwest Side man has been charged with murder in a Friday night slaying in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, police said.

Cliffon Johnson, 28, has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting that took place about 11:40 p.m. Friday in the 5400 block of South Hoyne Avenue, police said. The victim, Charles Wright, 39, of the 3100 block of West 71st Street, was pronounced dead at 12:35 a.m. Saturday at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Wright suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach, police said. An autopsy conducted Saturday determined that he died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner's office.

Johnson was ordered held without bail in a hearing Monday, according to Cook County Jail records.

Police were called to a home on Hoyne after reports of shots fired and found the victim at the residence, according to Police News Affairs.

The morning Wright died, police blocked off the front porch of a red-brick house at the intersection of West 54th Street and South Hoyne Avenue.

One block east, evidence related to the shooting lay in a narrow alley between two two-story houses on South Seeley Avenue.

Johnson, of the 5500 block of South Washtenaw Avenue, was expected to appear Monday in Cook County Bond Court.
