Man charged for blowing up suburban letterbox

SCENE: Boreas Road in Hamilton North on October 15.

A 35-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences stemming from the alleged explosion of a letterbox in Hamilton North earlier this month.

Police arrested the man, along with a 19-year-old woman, at an address in Macquarie Street, Belmont, late last week.

They were taken to Belmont police station where the man was charged with possession of firearms, replica firearm, prohibited weapons and malicious damage by explosion.

He was refused bail and had been due to appear in Newcastle Local Court on Saturday.

The woman was released pending further inquiries.

The man's malicious damage charge relates to an incident which occurred in Boreas Road, Hamilton North, on Tuesday, October 15.

Police were called to the street shortly before 5am and located a damaged letterbox. No one was injured, and no other property was damaged.

Following investigations, Newcastle City Police officers executed a number of search warrants at various residences and commercial properties.

The officers allegedly seized a number of firearms, prohibited weapons and various items used to manufacture and use explosive devices.

The arrests in Belmont followed.
