A man who allegedly fled the scene of a traffic stop after the driver of the vehicle he was travelling in allegedly punched a police officer has been arrested.

Jason Sims, 24, was in a car with 20-year-old Tyrone Fernando and two women when their vehicle was pulled over at Telarah about 8.30pm on Sunday.

Mr Fernando was charged on Sunday night and remains before the courts after he allegedly punched the arresting sergeant in the face, leaving him with a fractured eye socket.

Mr Sims allegedly fled the scene after the altercation took place.

He was arrested at a home in Ada Street, Telarah, on Monday afternoon after police appealed for him to come forward.

In Maitland Local Court on Tuesday, he faced charges of escaping police custody and resisting arrest - a count of assaulting a police officer causing actual bodily harm was withdrawn and dismissed.

Magistrate John Chicken denied Mr Sims bail.

He will face court again on Thursday.
