Man charged after 'young' children hit by car in Scots town

A man has been charged after a car hit two young kids in a Scots town.

The collision happened in Wick town centre in the Highlands yesterday evening.

Police say two children, who cops have described as 'young', were hit by the car with one sustaining minor injuries.

A 43-year-old man has been charged with dangerous driving, and licensing offences and will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

Cops also say he was using his mobile at the time and have issued a safety warning about the practice.

A statement from Highlands and Islands police division read: "A collision occurred in Wick town centre during the evening of Wednesday 17th November.

"Two young children were struck by a vehicle and thankfully only received minor injuries.

"The driver of the car was not paying attention as he was using a mobile phone at the time and then mounted the pavement striking the two children.

"A substantial body of research shows that using a hand-held or hands-free mobile phone while driving is a significant distraction, and substantially increases the risk of the driver crashing."
