
A man has been charged after a woman was allegedly punched in the face in a random, unprovoked attack in Maitland on Monday.
The 62-year-old woman was walking south along Church Street about 4.30pm when she stopped behind a man.
Police allege the man then turned around and punched the woman in the face without any provocation.
Bystanders helped the woman and the man fled the scene.
Emergency services were called and the woman was treated at the scene by paramedics before she was taken to Maitland Hospital for further treatment. She was later discharged.
Police commenced inquiries, which led them to Maitland Railway Station where they arrested a 40-year-old man.
He was taken to Maitland Police Station and charged with reckless wounding.
Police are appealing for witnesses who may have footage of the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
