Man charged after tragic Scots teen cyclist 'killed in horror crash'

A man has been arrested and charged in connection with a horror crash that killed a Scots teen cyclist.

Harley Smith, 16, died after he was hit by a car while cycling through Lauireston in Falkirk on November, 3 last year.

The teenager was cycling along the A803 on Polmont Road when he was struck by a Mercedes.

Police on Wednesday confirmed that a man, aged 28, had been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

He is expected to appear at Falkirk Sheriff Court on Thursday.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "A 28-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal road crash in Falkirk.

"The incident happened on Polmont Road near the junction with Dundas Road around 8.55pm on Friday, November 6, 2020.

"Sixteen-year-old cyclist, Harley Smith was pronounced dead at the scene following the incident.

"The 28-year-old man is expected to appear at Falkirk Sheriff Court on Thursday, April 22."

The Grangemouth troop lead tributes to Harley at the time of his passing. 

A statement read: “It is with a very heavy heart that I am bringing you the tragic news that one of our former cadets, Harley Smith, was involved in a collision with a car whilst on his bike and sadly lost his life.

“He was only 16.

"Not all of you will have known Harley but for those who do they will know he was a very quiet, unassuming and dedicated cadet.

“He always gave his all and had such a bright future ahead of him.

He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.

“RIP young man.”
