Man charged after police uncover clandestine drug lab at Shortland

A man has been charged after a clandestine drug lab was discovered at a Newcastle home.

Acting on a tip-off, police from the Newcastle City Proactive Crime Team executed a search warrant at a property on Matron Street, Shortland, about 2.30pm Thursday, where they spoke with a 40-year-old man.

Police allegedly found a large number of chemicals and equipment consistent with the manufacture of prohibited drugs at the rear of the property.

A crime scene was established and specialist police from the Drug and Firearms Squad's Chemical Operations Team examined the lab, which was in the process of being dismantled on Friday.

The 40-year-old man was charged with manufacturing a small quantity of a prohibited drug and possessing a prohibited drug.

He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Friday, where he was formally bail refused to reappear at the same court on Monday.
