Man charged after large gathering in Rochdale which saw police officer attacked

A man has been charged in connection with a large gathering which saw a police officer assaulted and a police car damaged.

Christian Earnshaw, 38, of Newark Road, Rochdale has been charged with assault on an emergency worker, criminal damage, possession of Class A and Class B drugs.

He has also been charged with breach of coronavirus restrictions.

Police were called to reports of a large group of people gathering on moorlands off Dewhirst Road in Rochdale, at around 6.30pm on Monday (17 August).

Officers attempted to engage with the group, but police say they failed to cooperate.

Extra resources were called to the incident to support the officers who were already in attendance, which led to the group dispersing.

However, a number of individuals refused to move and became aggressive towards the officers.

As a result, one of the attending officers was assaulted, and a police car was damaged.

Christian Earnshaw has been bailed and is due to appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court on Wednesday 16 September 2020.

Following the incident, three fixed penalty noticed (fines) have been issued so far.
