Man charged after homeless woman, 78, brutally beaten on New York subway train

A man has been charged after an elderly homeless woman was brutally attacked on a New York subway.

The 78-year-old victim was kicked several times in the face and body, leaving her bleeding and swollen.

The horrific attack was captured on video by fellow passengers who filmed it without intervening .

Now the New York Police Department (NYPD) has confirmed that Marc Gomez, 36, has been charged in connection with the shocking incident.

The mobile phone footage was recorded on March 10, but has been widely shared in recent days.

According to the New York Post , Gomez was arrested by a co-worker at an upmarket restaurant, where he worked as a dishwasher.

The owners of eatery Frenchette said he no longer works there, and told the Post: “When it was discovered that the unidentified person in the video was an employee, we responded immediately, extending full cooperation to law enforcement, and assisted as per their direction.

“Needless to say, this was an incredibly heinous, senseless act.”

In a statement the NYPD said: “The victim was treated and released from the hospital and is getting the care, advocacy and support needed. Thank you to everyone who shared and submitted tips.”

Chief Dermot F Shea confirmed in a tweet that the suspect is in custody.

Critics weighed in to criticise others on the train for filming the attack rather than intervening.

Gomez claimed the woman had threatened him with a knife, but police said no weapons were found on her.
